EU reinstates sanctions on Iran’s banks, oil and cargo flights

Summary

  • The European Council said Monday it had restored travel bans, asset freezes, and sweeping restrictions on Iran’s trade, finance, and transport sectors after the UN sanctions snapback. The measures include a freeze on the Central Bank’s assets and a ban on Iranian cargo flights to EU airports.

  • Iran's parliament will examine withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the pursuit of an atomic bomb in coordination with other state bodies, presidium spokesman Abbas Goudarzi said Monday.

  • Iran's exiled prince Reza Pahlavi said Sunday that the UN’s snapback sanctions showed the Islamic Republic cannot be reformed. He also held Ali Khamenei responsible for decades of decline.

  • The Islamic Republic objected in a letter to the UN secretary general over the secretariat’s notification to member states on the return of UN sanctions, state media reported.

  • Iran’s Parliament did not take up a decision on withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in its Sunday session, despite earlier statements by lawmakers that the issue would be discussed.

  • All UN sanctions suspended under the 2015 deal with Iran snapped back into force at 8 pm Eastern Time on September 27, one month after European powers triggered the snapback mechanism.
