Following Delay in Hospital Transfer; Somayeh Rashidi Dies

Somayeh Rashidi, a 41-year-old detainee from Tehran, died on September 25 after suffering medical neglect in Qarchak Women’s Prison. Arrested in April 2024 for writing protest slogans, she was first held in Evin Prison before being transferred to Qarchak following an Israeli attack there. Rashidi had long complained of health problems, but prison authorities dismissed her concerns, accused her of faking illness, and only administered psychiatric drugs, which worsened her condition. On September 15, she suffered a severe seizure and was taken to Mofatteh Hospital with reduced consciousness, where she later died. Doctors cited the delayed transfer as the main cause of her irreversible decline. While the Judiciary confirmed her death, it emphasized claims of prior drug addiction, psychiatric issues, and links to the MEK, diverting attention from the medical negligence. HRANA reports her family’s repeated warnings were ignored, underscoring systemic failures to provide proper care to political detainees.
